Offline life and withdrawal symptoms

Image
I realized I spend too much time with my phone checking social media activity. It is very addictive. I would check whats new immediately after I wake up in the morning. And I would check what's up before I go to bed...and countless times in between during the day. Instantly. Speaking about my phone I uninstalled Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Flickr apps. I did that yesterday. I plan to keep it this way for a week or two. And see how this works. It will not be easy, but I think I will get used to it. And I am not abandoning these accounts. Will check them on desktop or laptop. But not instantly. I already feel disoriented after this step. Sign of heavy addiction... Couple of months ago I abandoned Tumblr and 500px and I don't feel  any regrets. So this is it. Yesterday, I went to public library. You know, classic paper books. I used to go there before my kids were born, but I stopped. So I registered in the library again. Paid 120 Czech crowns registration fee and become ...

Spring, come, please.

Image
I wish the spring would come. Forecast says it will be here soon. I believe them. But January and February was grey, white, cold and smoggy. And such are my photos made in that period. Because the weather affects my perception. And my photos. These two girls were a little bit shy when I met them. As if they were about to run away in a moment. One of them ran away actually, but she returned. They wanted to be photographed. Girl in front was a little more brave. Ostrava, December 2016 Childhood in a little sad environment. Winter in a grey city with dumped Christmas tree behind the boys. Ostrava, January 2017 P.

Photos, that are not meant to be hung on the wall.

Image
1. Sunset. Saturday afternoon. I drove the car. I was going back home after short hangout with my camera. Thoughts were emerging and fainting in my mind. But one particular was interesting, so I thought I will hold it in my head and write it down tonight. So I am doing... I thought I am not shooting the type of photos that anyone would like to frame and hang on the wall. I wouldn't enjoy to see this type of photos on the wall. My photos are not meant to be a home decoration. This is the fact. Documentary photos in general is not the living room art. Ok. So, I saved the idea here. Done. 2. Actually, there was another thought I had earlier today, when we were walking with my wife and kids around the nearby pond. Beautifully clear and partly sunny day. Strong light. I can smell the spring in the air despite it is February. I made some photos along the way. Of the beauty I saw around me. Light was just perfect so anything I would click would be a nice photo. And I made some. ...

Stories from the periphery and street

Image
So this guy told me, that the building behind him is empty. I said it is damaged and he explained that the guy, his neighbor, goes there and destroys stuff. Anyway,  when I was there during summer last year, there were still people living inside. And last week, there were new plastic windows. But, for now the house is empty. Frydek-Mistek, Decemeber 2016 I thought he looks like a nice old man from a fairy tale. Such an interesting character.... Ostrava, December 2016 This one was made on St. Nicholas Day in Prague's subway. Prague, December 2016 P.

New stories in old world

Image
Or perhaps old stories in old word. A little smoking relax... Frydek-Mistek, November 2016 They seem to be ready for some action... Ostrava, December 2016 P.

Gloomy days

Image
Winter days in Ostrava are gloomy. But than I talked to guy from Oslo, Norway. He said whole year in Oslo has been gloomy so far. Any puddle is good enough for kids. Ostrava, November  2016 And anything could be turned to fun. Ostrava, December 2016 P.

Shutter sound...too noisy

Image
Sound of shutter on my Oly drives me crazy. It is too laud. Sound as  you slammed the door in the car. And it bothers me since I use it among people on close distance. So I am looking for a camera that is more discrete and more convenient for my needs. She told me that there are bedbugs in the corner behind her. And that if they bite you, there will be bruise with blood that hurts.... Ostrava, November 2016 He was looking suspiciously a little bit... Frydek-Mistek, November 2016 P.

Walking the street. December episodes.

These pompoms...and eyes! Ostrava, December 2016 Must be great to have a cart...well, better than nothing. Ostrava, December 2016 Impression from pre-Christmas Ostrava... Ostrava, December 2016 P.

Stories from the periphery

Image
I like how the dog turned around to find out what's going on behind him. Ostrava, December 2016 This photo was made before Christmas. The guy has obviously different kind of worries. Ostrava, December 2016 P.

Walking the horse

Image
This was was made during Christmas. It was evening and I didn't expect to capture more photos that day. Suddenly I saw this unusual march on the sidewalk. Almost as I was thrown decades back in time... Kojetin. December 2016 Huge shoes he has. His father is probably missing them... Ostrava, December 2016 P.

Invitation to my exhibition

Image
A poster of my solo exhibition "The Peripheries of Ostrava" (in czech Ostravská periferie). Exhibition will take place in the gallery, which is a part of a city library. Photos will be displayed from 2/3/2017 till 30/4/2017. Monday till Friday, 6:00 - 18:30. P.

The Peripheries of Ostrava

Image
So, my upcoming exhibition has a name already. Well, it is in Czech, but it would be something like "The Peripheries of Ostrava". Thematically, the exhibition will be a series of documentary photographs from the city and they will show people from the social periphery. Theme is set. Two test prints to be picked up today. It is in the process. This boy reminds me Kenny from South Park. It was a couple of days before Christmas. Sadly lost in his hoody. Ostrava, December 2016 This is very busy window. People are out there every time of the year. Ostrava, December 2016 P.

Warriors of Ostrava

Image
I saw these two guys walking slowly on the bridge. They were moving slower than snails. I first photographed them from up there - standing right in front of them. But the photo didn't work out well. So, I run down the staircase and I still had time to make a couple of photos from down there. Ostrava, December 2016 P.

Girl with balloon

Image
She kind of wanted to be photographed, while she was saying that she doesn't want to. It was kind of a game. She laughed every time I made a photo. I liked the contrast of environment, sad and poor social periphery, versus cheerful and spontaneous child. Ostrava, December 2016 P.

Ostrava people and stories

Image
So, we are now having an exhibition in Poland (Wroclaw). It is a small joint exhibition. Three authors. Fifteen photographs in total. It started last week. Photos displayed there are urban landscapes and urban details. All were made in Katowice and surrounding area. I am already working on preparation of my first solo exhibition, which will be shown in the city of Ostrava. It was supposed to start in September, but organizers (city library) told me they have a spot for me from March. Just a little change, but I don't mind. So, there is one month to get ready. These days I am making a selection of 40 photographs, that will be displayed. Thinking about a title of the exhibition. I asked my Flickr friend to write an introduction for the exhibition. Also contemplating on print dimensions etc. All photographs will be monochrome and it will be a documentary from Ostrava city. Ostrava - Vitkovice, October 2016 P.
